what’s the ‘2025 dream plan do festival’ organised by the design trust?

Although we have been self-publishing our creative business planners, journals and diaries for 9 consecutive years (!), this is the first time we are hosting the Dream Plan Do Festival – on Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January 2025, from 10am – 1pm UK.

We have ‘flipped’ it around this year. We have gone back to our roots as an online business school and put the emphasis on the importance of the act of planning and encouraging creatives to actually create juicy but do-able business plans, and support them to make it happen and stay on track … rather than the product of the planner itself. (Although our business planner handbook is beautiful & useful!)

Of course, the start of a new year is the perfect time to work ON your creative business. To look ahead and focus on your big business dreams. To reflect on your talents, values, background. To identify your ideal clients and get to know them better. To create a financial forecast and make sure that your creative business is viable! (Oh yes, we love that part!) And to work on your marketing and what’s stopping you to create the business you want.

But, this NOT about creating a set of New Year’s Resolutions and unrealistic goals that have been forgotten by mid January!

This is NOT just another boring business planning training!

We want to create a special & inspiring collaborative online experience for you. We will not be talking at you or even teaching you … but what we will do is that YOU will be doing the dreaming, planning & doing for your small creative business! perhaps ‘DREAM PLAN DO’ IS not for you, if …

  • You love making & creating, but it’s a hobby for you. You are not interested in creating a business, marketing or selling, and you do not really want to charge properly for what you do. We know how important hobbies are, but The Design Trust is an online business school for creative professionals, and the Festival will probably not be right for you.
  • You do not want to share your business dreams, plans, actions or wisdom with other creatives. You do not want to learn, play, experiment or contribute. You don’t want to get outside of your comfort zone. Maybe it’s too confrontational or confidential. Maybe you are a perfectionist worried about what others might think. Maybe you are a super introvert or shy person. No problem at all, but the Dream Plan Do Festival is unlikely to be right for you, as it will be partly an individual journey, and partly a collaborative and creative experience. We invite Festival go-ers to join us live for the 3 morning sessions, to put their cameras on, contribute and properly take part and show up. You won’t have time to check your emails or social media or make some work. Working with other creatives will be an important part of this creative business planning experience. If you are not comfortable with this (for whatever reason) then we suggest you won’t sign up.
  • You haven’t got access to a computer or the internet. The Dream Plan Do Festival is an online event. We recommend that you will join us from a quiet space so you can focus and use your Dream Plan Do Business Planner Handbook. We highly recommend that you try to join us for all 3 sessions, but if you have other responsibilities or technical issues then the recordings will be made available in the private course hub till 31 December 2025.

Patricia van den Akker is the Director of The Design Trust, the online business school for designers, makers & creative professionals, based in London. For over 25 years she has worked as a creative business adviser, trainer & coach, with 1,000s of creatives.

This is the 9th consecutive year (!) that Patricia has created an annual planner for creatives, in which she shares many of her favourite and most useful creative business planning tools, time management and productivity tips, but also to help you to dig deeper into what makes you ‘you’ and what’s important to you, as well as making marketing & financial planning do-able for creatives!

The last few years have been really tough for many small creative business owners. And the last year especially has been very unpredictable with lower sales and more competition.

Many creative people are at a crossroads, re-evaluating their lives, motivations, values, purpose and their niche.

It’s harder to get sales and trade orders now so you’ll need to be more creative and strategic about choosing the right income streams, marketing channels, and a business model that will work for you, your business and your dream clients.

It’s easy to feel down, to make and make and make some more, and withdraw from going out there to market yourself. But that will not lead to a successful creative business that you feel proud of!

  • When is the Dream Plan Do Festival happening?

    The 2025 Dream Plan Do Festival will take place on Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January from 10am – 1pm (UK time).

    It’s an online event using Zoom, and we highly recommend that you join live as we believe that working together at the same time on your creative business plans will give you energy and inspire you to actually DO the planning. You will also be invited to work with other creatives on the live call, to learn from each other & support each other. This is often very powerful to generate new ideas, overcome challenges and improve accountability.

  • I haven’t started my creative business yet. Is the Dream Plan DO Festival for me??

    The Dream Plan Do Festival is aimed at creative professionals … from recent startups and graduates, to creatives who have been going for 30 years or more.

    If you haven’t started your business yet then it’s likely that the Dream Plan Do Festival is too advanced.

    But it all depends … on your background, motivation and readiness to get started. The Festival and Business Planner Handbook can provide you with key exercises and goal setting to get your new business of the ground much sooner than if you struggled alone. So if you are confident and think this will work for you than it probably will!

    As Henry Ford said: “If you think you can, or you think you can’t … you are always right”.

  • I have been a creative business for a long time. Is the Dream Plan Do Festival + Business Planner Handbook just for new creatives?

    No not at all!

    Most of our planning clients have been in business between 5 – 10 years, and many have been working for 3 decades or more.

    If you want to re-evaluate what you are doing, what’s important to you, what your strenghts and dream clients are … and you want a proven planning framework + the group energy then we would love to welcome you to the Dream Plan Do Festival in January!

  • I am not based in the UK. Can I join & get the Business Planner Handbook send to me?

    We are passionate about creating an international community and very much welcome creative professionals from across the world to join us! It’s one of the beautiful aspects of teaching online.

    We very much believe that we have more in common than what makes us different, and we love learning from different cultures and languages.

    Patricia is Dutch and English is her 2nd language, so she should be easier to understand! We also provide English subtitles if that’s easier for you (we hope to offer subtitles in some of the main languages too in January).

    Many of our clients are overseas, and in the last 9 years we have sent our planners, diaries or journals to 34 countries.

    GOOD NEWS: If you are outside of the UK and EU then you will not have to pay 20% VAT tax, so basically you will pay 20% less! This will be automatically deducted.

    If you are in the EU and VAT registered you can deduct the VAT or it will already be automatically deducted. If not then we will give you a refund (email us if you have a question or if this hasn’t been done.)

    However, please note:

    1) We highly recommend that you try to join the Dream Plan Do Festival live, so make sure that the times work for you in your time zone.

    2) You get the most out of the Dream Plan Do Festival if you join in with the conversations, so you do need to be able to speak basic English.

    3) Unfortunately post Brexit there might be an additional charge or customs or other duties for clients in the EU, and you are responsible for paying those, not us. As each EU country (and sometimes even counties or provinces!) have their own regulations it’s impossible for us to advice on this. We are going to try to send the business planner handbooks as ‘free gift’ as you get them for free as part of the Festival, but we are still getting legal advice on this. If this would be possible then no fees should be charged at all.

     

  • I have ADHD. Will this planner or training work for me?

    Many of our creative clients have ADHD. (I suspect around 30% of our current clients, as many create very detailed work).

    Many creatives with ADHD (diagnosed or self-diagnoses) have been particularly interested in our planners, diaries and journals over the years as they are often desperate for a solution to deal with …

    • their poor time management
    • being easily distracted,
    • challenges to create a plan + then stick to it (and then rebel against yourself and the plan you created!),
    • low self esteem/highly critical but very high expectations,
    • impossibility to guess how long a job takes (because when you are focused it takes so much less than when you are not …),
    • Executive Decision Making which makes it hard to see how things connect but also to prioritise,
    • Trouble with costing and pricing, numbers, Excel and the like, but also a tendency to overspend …
    • Dislike online training that’s too boring and too long.
    • Use of Post It notes and colour coding can really help.

    (As you hopefully can see I kind of know what the various issues are when you are dealing with ADHD!)

    But, I will be really honest. Every person with ADHD is different. We have had some of our clients who absolutely love the Business Planner and others who rally can’t make it work.

    We try to be ADHD-friendly e.g. we will have more regular breaks during the Festival, and use different ways to help you plan (not just a-typical!) which we find often helps EVERYBODY on the call!

    But, I do not want to promise that this going to be ‘THE’ solution for you. You probably have to adapt it to your preferences. We will introduce different ways of time management, planning etc that you might find useful too. We will try to match you with others with ADHD to support & learn from each other (especially in the VIP Club).

    It’s about you finding what works for YOU.

     

  • Can I join the Festival with more people? I want to order in bulk, do you give a discount?

    No, you can’t. You are purchasing one ticket to the Festival and you will get one Business Planner Handbook per order.

    Good news! If you are working in a partnership or with one employee/freelancer then you can join together and share the online access.

    But, you can not invite a team of 3 or more, or your mates to join the Festival, or share the recordings with people who have not paid. If we find out then we will immediately stop your access, and might bar you from future events.

    If you want to order in bulk (to access with more than 3 people or to get more Business Planner Handbooks for your team, organisation, tenants, studio or friends) then email us asap on info@thedesigntrust.co.uk as we will give you a group discount!

  • When will I get my business planner handbook?

    This is a PRE-ORDER, and we will start sending the 2025 Dream Plan Do Business Planner Handbook at the end of November.

  • Can I get the 2025 Business Planner Handbook on its own? Without the Dream Plan Do Festival?

    Sorry, it comes as a package only. We only provide the 2025 Dream Plan Do Business Planner Handbook when you either join the Dream Plan Do Festival or the Dream Plan Do VIP Club. 

    For us (as an online training business) the main thing is the Festival and VIP Club, and the Business Planner Handbook is the tool to help you to make your goals and dreams happen, and to work on your creative business throughout the year.

    We really believe that the Festival will add so much more value to your business planner and business planning, turning your business ideas into action. Over the years too many creatives told us they hadn’t really used our diaries/planners/journals and we don’t want that to happen.

    And honestly, there is a cost issue here too … the costs to create, write, design & produce the Business Planner Handbook in the UK are very high. The cost we would need to charge for the planner on its own would be too high, and not viable for us as a small creative business.

  • Is the Dream Plan Do Business Planner Handbook available as a download?

    The simple answer is: No.

    And for the last 9 years since we started producing planners we have NEVER offered a download. 

    Of course we did consider this option, but … we strongly (!) believe that it would really change your business planning experience – because you deserve it!

    We want to give you a really great planning experience … with a beautifully perfectly bound full colour book with recycled pages that do not bleed. That you can happily come back to again and again throughout the year. And even in years to come, to reflect and remember your ideas, and see your own progress.

    And this year, with its larger A4 horizontal size, I hope you get the feeling of a generous sketch book … to sketch out your ideas into goals, into plans and actions!

    Also, it’s proven that handwriting your goals has a much more positive impact on you, and makes it more likely that you will achieve them!

  • Is the planner dated? Has it got dates in?

    No, it’s a business planner handbook, not a diary.

    Although it has got a two-page spread for each month, with a one page overview calendar (see images above on the sales page)

    In the past we have created diaries but this year it does NOT include weekly/daily/hourly overviews.

    We have had to make some difficult financial decisions this year, as paper  prices are still very high. So we decided to opt for a larger size Business Planner Handbook (requested by many!) with fewer pages, so something had to go, and it was the diary pages.

    Also sales in the last two years decreased for the diary. Significantly fewer people wanted a diary as part of their business planner, as they use alternatives that are easily available or digital diaries. It was just not viable for us to continue the diary.

  • What about refunds or cancellations?

    PLEASE make sure that you check if the Festival and the Business Planner Handbook is right for you before you order. We are a very small business, and increasingly find that people order and return too easily (just like ordering various sizes in clothing).

    Returns especially are an issue for us, as we rely on the pre-orders for our cash flow but also to predict how many sales we might get. And it adds to our admin, and often the returned planner will not be in a good enough condition to sell so that’s a loss for us.

    If you decide to cancel then please do so BEFORE we send you your Business Planner Handbook at the end of November, as this saves us a lot of time and effort with the returns!

    If we have send you your Business Planner Handbook and you decide it really is not right for you (and do not have a creative colleague to pass it on to or sell to), then please return your order within 14 days of receiving it. You are responsible for postage. Please send in the original packaging and ensure it’s properly packed so it’s in salleable condition. If it’s damaged in any way when returned then we have the right to deduct £35,- of your the refund to compensate for the loss of the planner and additional admin costs.

    We do not accept cancellations after 31 December 2024 (unless for very personal circumstances). Remember that the Dream Plan Do Festival sessions will be recorded so if you are unable to make them you can watch the recordings till 31 December 2025.
